We have a large bin filled with neon play balls near our checkouts and today when things got busy, I headed up front to help out. Those balls grasp the attention of almost all the kids that walk through the door and today there were 3 young boys that decided to play a round of basketball with them. Balls were flying in every direction. I let it go on until I finished with my customer and then I asked them to stop and pick up all the balls that had landed on the floor. I explained my concern that someone may trip on them and fall down. The boys listened very well and within seconds the balls were all back in the bin. By then we had gotten caught up with people in line so I decided to visit with the boys while their mothers finished checking out. I saw that one of them had a can of glow in the dark slime so I asked if I could see it. He said, “This was a rip off. It doesn’t even glow.” The littlest one of the three piped up and said, “Sure it will. You just have to feed it some light!” I agreed and told him he might just be surprised by his blob of slime tonight, when he shuts the lights off if he did get a chance to “feed” it some light.
Before long I had all three boys gathered near me and they were quite the pleasant little visitors. They said they found all kinds of things in the ball bin that didn’t belong in there including a fidget and it wasn’t until then that I noticed the littlest boy had only one finger on each of his hands. It didn’t seem to bother him in the least as he tried to carefully balance that fidget on one finger and spin it with the other.
It’s moments like this that put life back into perspective. It’s so easy to forget how blessed we are with 10 fingers that all work, 2 legs that carry us around, 2 ears that hear and 2 eyes that see. It’s also easy to forget our positive attitude at home and blame the entire world for our problems but this fine young man is making the most of what he has. His 2 legs allowed him to run all over, his 2 hands allowed him to toss balls into the air, his 2 ears allowed him to hear me when I asked him to help pick up the balls on the floor and his two bright eyes clearly displayed his positive attitude. He was an inspiration for anyone willing to allow him to be and not for one second did he feel sorry for himself. He bounced and tossed balls, he made a fidget spin and he even knew that in order to get glow in the dark slime to glow, you must first feed it some light!
It seems that every once in a while life tosses in a lesson on perspective. You might never see it coming but it sure has a way of making a lasting impression. I guess you could say it’s the light that makes us “glow” in those dark times when we lose sight of our countless blessings.
