Double Nickels

I haven’t written anything for several days now and as I sit here sifting through various thoughts in an attempt to find the “lump” that won’t fit through the mental sifting screen, I’m coming up with absolutely nothing.  I suppose this could alarm me and writer’s block could be setting in.  I’m going to just keep typing and see if anything transpires.

I’ve typed 56 posts in just over two months.  I’m quite amazed as I remember reading something about how a person should have at least 10 posts when starting a blog but shooting for 30 would be best.  I felt a bit overwhelmed but plugged along and set a preliminary goal.  I decided once I reached 55 posts I was going to produce my first book.  I’ve changed this to creating my book with the best 55 short stories I’ve ever written.  That’s bound to be a few more months down the road.  If I stuck with my original plan I wouldn’t be much of a procrastinator, now would I?  Can you hear Don’s low pitched growl?  I can and it really is quite cute. 🙂  If you’re curious as to why I would chose 55 keep reading.  You’ll understand. (Pssst:  I think something transpired.)

The number 55 has become incredibly fascinating to me as it has appeared on countless occasions throughout my life.  My first memory is when it appeared on a bumper sticker we had gotten free at the State Fair.  It was most likely back in the mid to late 70’s.  It read, “I’m 55, drive me.”  My sister stuck it to the under side of the shelf in our closet and I’m pretty sure it’s still there.

The next memory I have is when I was staying with my sister and brother-in-law while he was stationed in the Air Force.  My sister and I went to play Bingo.  I’m not usually very lucky but during the last blackout I sailed along and before I knew it, the only number I had left on my card not dobbed with my purple dobber was 55.  I can still remember the excitement that raced through my body when I heard the caller say, “The next number is double nickels….55….55 under G!”  Woohoo!  I won!  I saved the bingo card and you can tell which number was the last one called as it features the splattered purple dot covering my double nickels!

I didn’t think a lot about that number back then but after going through a divorce some 30 years later I began to see this number everywhere.  It gave me a sense of pleasure and peace.   The urge to look at the clock would usually reveal it was something :55.  I would notice mile marker 55 every time I was driving and speed limit signs that read 55.  I almost never look at license plates but when I would zero in on one it would almost always have the number 55 on it.  My new cell number ends in 55 and the corporate address for my job is located at 5555 Someplace Ave.  and there’s a 55 in the phone number for my workplace as well.

I decided to do a bit of research on this number and what I found was very interesting.  It sort of explains why I have a sense of pleasure and peace when I see this number.  Do I plan my life around it now or believe everything I’ve read and incorporate every last word into every second of my existence….no.  Do I like being reassured that all the changes I’ve made in my life and all the new experiences I’ve encountered were a part of my destiny…..yes, I do.

There is other research equally as fascinating but this was my favorite.  I think you’ll see why.
