A “String” of Thoughts

Although I’ve had a tough time getting back into writing on a regular basis, I want you all to know I am still inspired by all the magic in this world.  I avoid the news as much as possible as I am learning that in this one and only life we live, we are responsible for our own happiness.  I decided long ago the news will never make me happy.  I realize there are “feel good” stories from time to time but the bulk of media coverage is centered around what will land the most publicity.  Unfortunately bad news wins almost every time.

Maybe some would find my thoughts offensive but I choose to believe God created each and every one of us.  I believe His intentions were that we would love one another and not judge.  I believe He never intended for skin color to ever define who’s more important.   I believe we just stopped listening to our hearts when we had access to the buttons  marked “power” and “volume” on our remote controls.

Here’s a story you’ll never see on the news but for me and my heart, it made the headlines.

I was at work today when I noticed a man and a young girl approaching the service counter near the frame shop.   It was easy to see the young girl was blind as she had her arms wrapped around her father’s arm in such a way that you could just tell, she needed his guidance.  I asked them if there was anything I could help them with.  I could see the man was holding a band removed from a skein of yarn and he said, “Yes.  We were wondering if you had any more of this particular yarn.”  I entered the information into a tiny, hand held machine that revealed we were completely out but then I said, “Perhaps I can find some and have it sent here from another store.”  It was then the polite and beautiful young girl took center stage and confidently gave me her name and her phone number so I could let her know if I did, indeed, find some yarn for her.

You could just sense the bond between that man and that young girl.  I would venture to say she was around 12 or 13 and it was clear he was the center of her universe.  I realize she was blind and felt very safe while her arms were wrapped around his but I saw something more.  I saw a child filled with respect and love for someone.  I saw a child that wasn’t rude and obnoxious towards her parent but rather a  child that cherished the time she was sharing with this man standing beside her.  Wouldn’t it be amazing to see more parents and children with this same type of bond?

I can’t tell you how many rude and disrespectful kids I encounter.  They have no patience.  They have no rules and the parents allow themselves to be pushed around and told what to do .  These kids get whatever they want…..or do they?  You have to wonder if some of those parents will ever realize the best investment they can choose to add to their portfolio may just be the time they spend talking to and finding ways to show their kids just how much they love them without getting out their credit card.  The father and daughter I visited with today needed each other due to a disability but I honestly believe their bond would be very similar even if that girl wasn’t visually impaired.  You could just feel it and it truly was a very beautiful thing.

  1. Yes it’s a shame how kids get what they want when they want it. I wish I could take them back to the depression days . They have no idea what a want is or to live without a NEED. That’s why we are old school and find happiness in the simple things in life. Thank you God for the things we can not buy.
